The title comes from the 1992 film, The Lawnmower Man, while the primary inspiration was the novel Neuromancer by William Gibson. Beyond that, the story attempts to blend the two genres of fantasy and science fiction, much in the way that Star Wars did when it introduced the concept of a Jedi Knight wielding a laser sword, presenting what is essentially a fantasy tale in a science-fiction context.
